Learning Through Video

There are many mathematical videos on the internet that teach various mathematics concepts. Do you think videos should be used in the math classroom to teach or reenforce a concept or skill?
I think that using videos in a math setting is a good way to show students different examples of how to solve or do something. For some reason as soon as you say you are going to show a video it grabs the students attention right away. This is a good way to teach a concept or introduce a new concept and have all your students paying attention. You can also show a video to help your students learn a long formula like the quadratic equation through a song. My high school math teacher showed us a video of the quadratic equation when I was a freshman in high school and to this day I still remember it. So as you can see videos are very effective in a math classroom because they help the students to remember formulas or learn concepts in a way that relates to them.
Students love the use of technology because that is their life style so anyway you can incorporate technology into a lesson such as video is a good thing. Not all teaching should be done through video but if there is a video that you think would be useful to your students learning, showing it in class would be a good idea.
Another way to incorporate video into your students learning is by giving them a list of videos to watch on their own time, if they need more examples of a concept. They will be able to watch these videos at home when they are working on their homework if they forget how to do something. I do not see any negatives to incorporating videos into your lessons.

  1. Michelle, I agree with you that using videos in a math class is a good way to show students different examples of how to solve or do something and students love technology so why not use it. I remember I use to look forward to science class when I was younger because we use to watch “Bill Nye the Science Guy”. I remember how excited I was watching them and looking back to it now it was also educational, and now it is a lot easier than it was before to incorporate videos in lesson plans with how advanced technology is today. Also, it might also lead students into looking up educational videos on their own and learn on their own.

  2. Michelle,

Great post! I feel it is very important to show videos in math class because it changes the pace of class and is a nice piece of technology that you can incorporate into your lessons. There are many videos out there that can explain something in a different way than you or your students may. Having multiple points of view in learning is a key factor in being able to reach and connect with all of your students. I like how you thought of many different ways to incorporate videos into your learning. Planning for learning is so important and this post proves that you clearly gave this topic a lot of thought.

  3. Michelle, I believe you hit many key points in your post that speak to your potential as a teacher. First off, when you mentioned that videos are good because they "show students different examples of to solve problems," you are employing Universal Design Learning, which is an effective method of teaching because it provides multiple means of representation of material.
Second, when you talk about how technology grabs students attention, it demonstrates that you are aware of your students' interests, which will serve you well in the future.
Third, you're not afraid to incorporate technology! It seems that you understand that this is the way of the future and fully prepared to embrace it for the betterment of your students. Michelle, we need more teachers like you. Great post.
